The Local Area
Askham, Cumbria
On Our Doorstep
Lowther Castle
We're in the centre of the picturesque village of Askham, surrounded by some beautiful footpaths and bridleways though woods, pastures and open moors. A short walk above the village is the fairytale Lowther Castle.
Fells and Mountains
Being on the edge of the Cumbrian Lake District National Park we're in easy reach of the fells. A footpath leads across the moors above the village where you can meet the High Street route up into the Eastern Fells.
Haweswater is a few miles to our south, and Keswick a short drive to our west, putting us in easy reach of Scafell Pike and the rest of the central fells. A short drive down the western shore of Ullswater brings you to Glenridding, an excellent starting point for exploring the Helvellyn range.
Lakes
Ullswater
The northern shores of Ullswater are a short walk across the moor (or a short drive around to Pooley Bridge). The Ullswater Steamers run throughout the year and provide fantastic, leisurely trips across "England's most beautiful Lake".
Fishing
River Lowther
The River Lowther provides some of the best wild brown trout fishing in England. If you'd like to know more about fishing in the area we would be very happy to put you in touch with Stuart Broadhurst, a very experienced local guide and STANIC-qualified instructor.
Shooting and Hunting
Accompanied Red deer and Roe deer stalking is available on the Lowther Estate, along with various other forms of rough shooting. See the Lowther Estate web site for more details. http://www.lowther.co.uk/sporting/
Horse Riding
Lowther Driving Trials
We're surrounded by some excellent bridleways that allow for riding though some beautiful countryside.
Every August Askham is home to Lowther Driving Trials and Country fair. 2008 Driving Trials take place on August 8th, 9th and 10th. See the Lowther website for more details. http://www.lowther.co.uk/events/
